Turning an interest into a tech career

Harrison Prangnell – Boss Global Apprentice Programme

My name is Harrison Prangnell. From a young age I always had a strong interest in technology and anything that involved a computer, resulting in me taking Creative Imedia as a GCSE and then Computer Science as an A-Level.

Shortly before taking my A-Level exams, I was introduced to Jeff Higgs and Andy Bass through a family friend. They were looking to start a junior training programme at Boss Global Consulting. I was happy to listen to what the training programme would include and was offered an opportunity to become a Junior Functional Consultant and qualified Business Analyst with Boss Global Consulting.

Then, after I had finished all of my exams and received my results, I sat down with my parents and weighed up the advantages and disadvantages of some of the job opportunities I’d received, which I eventually concluded that I was going to take Andy up on his offer and give Boss Global Consulting my best shot.

It was estimated it could take up to a year before I would be “business-ready” (fully qualified and ready to be placed in a company) but thanks to a ton of support from Jeff and Andy, the entire team, and my own personal drive, I became fully qualified as a Business Analyst and a Functional Consultant within the first 6 months of my Apprenticeship.

Getting to this stage requires commitment, a drive to expand your knowledge, and a lot of attention, because in order to become business-ready you must achieve three separate certifications, the first being Microsoft Power Platform fundamentals to give you a base knowledge of how the system that you will be using actually works.

Next is the qualification in Business Analysis, where you will now have to apply your knowledge of the Platform and put it into the context of a real Business scenario, by assessing the business’s current position and comparing it to their desired position, and then dissecting the steps that it will take in order to push the business to where they want to be, and in my personal experience this certification was the most difficult of the three to gain which is why commitment is massively important.

Finally, I was tasked to gain my qualification as a Functional Consultant, which a lot of my knowledge for this was gained through the Business Analysis certification, and Power Platform Fundamentals certification. Therefore, all that I had to do for this one was “fill in the gaps” and learn how to properly approach a client with the intention to gain requirements and properly document those requirements. This included lots of self-studying and repetitive practice examinations in order to indulge all of the information that I was reading. But in my opinion all of the hard work and dedication has paid off and will be utilised no matter what company I am placed in.

Since becoming fully qualified and receiving my first client as a functional consultant, I have new goals such as getting a certification to become a Marketing Functional Consultant as this will make me more attractive to potential customers. Also, I would like to land myself a large business change project as this would be great for my own personal development and give me a load of experience in the qualifications I have gained, and I have no doubt that with Boss Global Consulting that this will be achievable.
Leading to my final point that I would absolutely recommend Boss Global Consulting to any junior looking to get into the world of tech, as in my experience there is no better way to get your foot in the door and it has been an exciting, fun and the perfect start to my career.
